An institute serving public decision-making
In a context of rapid transformation of digital technologies, public authorities face complex choices. INESIA (National Institute for the Evaluation and Security of Artificial Intelligence) provides its expertise to guide these decisions, acting as an independent advisory body to national authorities.
Its mission is to produce reliable analyses of innovations in artificial intelligence, anticipate their societal, economic, and security implications, and recommend best practices for their governance. This expertise enables French institutions to base their policies on objective, rigorous, and up-to-date data.
Support for regulation and standardization
INESIA actively participates in the development of technical and regulatory standards governing AI in France and Europe. In collaboration with ministries, regulatory agencies, and European bodies, the Institute:
- Issues technical opinions on emerging innovations, assessing their risk levels and compliance with fundamental ethical principles;
- Contributes to the drafting and adaptation of security and transparency standards applicable to AI systems, particularly in critical sectors;
- Plays a key role in the transposition and implementation of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the AI Act, two major European Union texts aimed at regulating digital uses and artificial intelligence.
Through this action, France is equipped with a robust regulatory framework, capable of supporting innovation while ensuring citizen protection.
A French voice in European debates
Beyond its national missions, INESIA contributes to representing French interests in European and international discussions on AI governance. Its work feeds collective reflections on crucial topics such as:
- The classification of high-risk AI;
- Algorithmic responsibility;
- The balance between technological innovation and respect for fundamental freedoms.
By advocating for an approach based on ethics, transparency, and security, INESIA strengthens France’s digital sovereignty and its ability to influence global standards.
Towards enlightened and proactive regulation
INESIA’s public advisory role is not limited to reacting to technological developments: it follows a logic of anticipation. The Institute monitors the emergence of new AI technologies (such as foundational models, autonomous decision-making systems, or embedded AI) to alert authorities early and guide public policies before widespread use.
This forward-looking analytical capacity is essential to building a coherent, agile, and democratic AI governance, serving the public interest.
